This integrated reading and speaking resource is based on the topic of goal setting. It is designed for Intermediate level Adult ESL/EAL students. It can be used during back-to-school time, at the start of a new course, at new year. There is enough material for at least 3 lessons and as well as an in-depth look into goals, there is also material on overcoming, obstacles, dealing with distractions and time management.
Goal setting is an important and popular topic for Adult ESL classes. Most adult ESL students will come to class with a goal which is often something long term and not very specific such as “improve my English”, “Get a job” or “go to university” . But apart from attending a class they haven’t really thought about how they will get there.
This resource will help them break down their long-term goals into smaller more achievable goals that will help to keep them motivated.
Because adult ESL students often have other commitments such as part time work, or family responsibilities they face a lot of obstacles. This resource addresses those challenges to ensure the students success.
Topic related vocabulary, developing reading skills and lots of speaking/discussion opportunities are embedded in these lessons.
In this resource you will find 11 varied Activities that include:
3 x reading texts and comprehension activities.
4 x Vocabulary Activities
5 x graphic organisers
Teachers’ notes

This lesson is designed for Adult ESL Students at high beginner or pre intermediate levels. It will work well with a mixed ability/level class and there are opportunities for differentiation.
It is a complete lesson (maybe 2) on the topic of Global Warming and an introduction to Conditionals (zero form). It includes Reading, Writing ,Listening and Speaking activities.
Conditionals not usually included in Beginner’s courses because it is quite complex. This lesson will be challenging for most Beginners as it also includes some complex vocabulary There is a deliberate repetition of sentences in the activities to keep this simpler for beginners .
I have also kept the vocabulary level simple and relevant to beginner Adult ESL students.
Most of the activities are quite structured, self explanatory and build on each other so they are best done in order. The activities could be done orally in pairs first, if that works for your students. You can structure the activities as much or as little as your students need. A detailed lesson plan and answers are provided
This lesson aims to provide students with the functional language to talk about global warming and express something which is always true if the condition in the sentence is met.
The lesson is based on a dialogue that introduces some vocabulary about global warming demonstrates the use of the zero conditonal form
It covers a lot of other elementary language and language skills:
Reading and understanding simple texts.
Zero conditional – for general truths
Vocabulary of global warming and general life situations.
Completing a cloze activity

Writing simple sentences
Like all my resources, this lesson is designed specifically for adults. It incorporates language that adults will need to use and situations that are relevant to adult learners.

If you want to expand on this lesson, I do have a much more difficult Intermediate level zero conditional and first conditional lesson also on the topic of global warming , in my store. But it is quite a lot more difficult than this one.

I use this lesson with a mixed ability Beginner Adult ESL class. It is an integrated reading and writing lesson on the topic of language learning needs. The concept of language learning needs is introduced by a short reading text. By using this lesson with your students you will help them to become active language learners as well as learn the language to talk about their studies in general. This will work as a Back to School activity or any other time. It will help you find out more about your students and their needs and expectations.
What’s included?
a reading text
3 x reading tasks of varying difficulty
Vocab related to language learning
Extension activities – grammar focus
Completing forms
Guided writing
This lesson can be used in several ways:
•with total beginners – supported by a lot of scaffolding by the teacher
•at the beginning of the year/course to help you learn more about your students
Using a Needs Analysis gives you, the teacher, an insight into what the students need to learn and how they prefer to learn. But more importantly it will help you plan appropriate and relevant lessons specifically for them. Additionally, adult students appreciate that you are taking the time to find out about them and their needs.
A Needs analysis is an important tool for all student centred Adult ESL classes. At beginner level it can be a bit tricky to obtain detailed information but with this highly structured and scaffolded resource you, the teacher, will be able to gain some valuable information about your students. At the same time your students will be learning some useful language and skills.

The lessons are based on the requirements of the IELTS exam although the concepts are applicable to any type of academic writing.
All of the lessons focus on essay structure which is a problem most IELTS students struggle with. To get a good grade in IELTS the student must have a well structured essay that answers the question.
Package 1 focuses on Writing Task 1 which is a description of a graph, bar chart, table etc. It looks at the essay structure, language to describe trends in data and the language of comparison
Package 2 looks at the 5 most common essay types and how to identify them. It examines the essay structure of an opinion essay and an advantages and disavantages essay type. It addresses common mistakes and ways to avoid them.
Package 3 focuses on essay structure of opinion essays and the use of complex sentences and cohesive devices.

The lesson is based on a simple Information Text about Christmas in Australia. It could be used as a seasonal text in Australia or elsewhere but can be used at any time of the year as a reading activity based on an Information text. There is also opportunity for the students to talk and write about celebrations in their own cultures.
It contains 6 structured tasks, 4 of them are based directly on the Information Text. The last 2 tasks extend the topic and relate to celebrations in the students country of origin, giving the students the opportunity to share something about themselves and their culture. This is great for classroom dynamics. There is a mixture of reading, writing and speaking included.
I have done all the work so all you have to do is print and go.
Language is British/Australian English but there are no big differences to prevent use in US. Slides print to A4 paper.
I have checked this carefully, but if you find any errors, typos etc. please let me know so that I can fix it.
